Why The New NVIDIA Corporation (NASDAQ: NVDA) Graphics Cards are Actually a Big Deal

Let's talk about NVIDIA Corporation (NASDAQ: NVDA), specifically their newest Turing-enabled line of graphics processing units (GPUs) set to release at the end of the month. We're going to put aside stock prices for today, and instead focus on what this technology is capable of. It all comes down to lighting, which may not sound so important given the bevy of lighting technology at our disposal for computer graphics we have today. Well, all those lighting techniques are about to be thrown out of the window over the next few years.

Why NVIDIA Corporation (NASDAQ: NVDA) Ray Tracing is a Big Deal

Real-time ray tracing is the next advent in computer graphics. Ray tracing has been around for some time, however, the technique was taxing on hardware and scenes containing it were time-consuming to produce. Rendering the final product would take days for a short segment of the film, so ray tracing in an interactive environment, like a video game, was out of the question, and real-time ray tracing was thought impossible without specialized hardware.

Now, here comes NVIDIA Corporation (NASDAQ: NVDA) with their line of RTX GPUs, built specifically with ray tracing in mind. Though on paper on marginally more powerful than the last generation of GPUs the architecture has been radically changed. Now ray tracing is possible in video games, and it is making new levels of realism possible.

To demonstrate think of a reflection in a game and how that effect is created. Simple reflections previously were done through different techniques like cube mapping, where a static low-resolution image was superimposed on reflective surfaces. In games with fully reflective mirrors, developers would have to generate the entire space again and flip it around to create the illusion of a working mirror, obviously, this would result in twice the memory and processing power being consumed. With ray tracing an entirely different approach is taken.

Each object and its parts within a simulation can be assigned physical properties, metal, glass, wood, water and so forth. From there the camera acts as an eye, sort of in reverse, with the light source and what it would be reflecting from all being processed and sent back to the viewer. This allows a totally new level of realistic reflections with a range of effects. Seeing it all in action makes it clear how drastically different this technology is to what we had previously. The result is a far more convincing image, that is far less taxing on computer resources and it is absolutely the future of graphics technology.

Since seeing is better than hearing I'll link this incredible Battlefield V ray tracing demonstration from NVIDIA Corporation (NASDAQ: NVDA), and game developer Dice
