What to Expect From Consensus 2018

Blockchain week NYC is here and among the many events being held this year one event stands out in particular above the rest, that would be Coindesk's annual summit known as Consensus 2018, being held at the NY Hilton Midtown. This event brings together a vast crowd of managers, investors and journalists to listen to speakers on the current state and future of blockchain technology. Historically this has been a very important catalyst for cryptocurrency, typically a precursor to a major bull run, and this year doesn't look to be any different. If anything the numbers of attendees and the interest shown have increased massively.

All the Happenings

Consensus began in 2015 as a way to connect industry leaders and present new ideas for the crypto space. The first year saw an attendance of 400 individuals, the next year it increased substantially to 1,400! By 2017 2,700 were in attendance! Now we get to 2018 and the estimated number of attendees this year will be greater than 4,000, with some estimates close to 8,000. That is a huge jump in numbers over the past four years and it's certainly nothing to sneeze at considering the influence the event has had prior years. 2017 boasted strong sponsors and a lot of those return. Some of the 2018 sponsors include Kraken, Circle, Shapeshift, Ripple and Vechain (VEN), to name but a few. Most notably, however, this year Microsoft (NASDAQ: MSFT) and IBM (NYSE: IBM) have tossed their hats in the ring to sponsor the event. Interesting news especially now that it is known both companies are seeking their own blockchain technology solutions and looking toward a more decentralized future.

Microsoft is certainly drawing the most attention as a sponsor. Beyond just being a massive companies with sums of money few could conceive of Bill Gates himself has said some downright slanderous things about Bitcoin (BTC) and Blockchain, claiming previously, 'Cryptocurrencies cause deaths in a fairly direct way' and, recently saying he "...would short it if there was an easy way to do it," of which there are several but that is a different subject. Curiously this most recent quote came from when he sat down on CNBC's "Squawk Box" with notorious Bitcoin (BTC) bear Warren Buffet and his henchman, Charlie Munger of Berkshire Hathaway (NYSE:BRK.A). Some have pointed to this as obvious signs of manipulation and I would have to agree. Anyway, back to Consensus 2018.

One of the key features of Consensus is the speakers, and wow, there are a lot of them. So man speakers in fact that I won't even bother trying to list them but they include, journalists, scientists, lawmakers, CEOs, and financial strategists. This barely scratches the surface but if I started going in depth here this article would never end.

Beyond the speakers, there are plenty of other notable features and competitions during the summit. Zcash (ZEC) will be giving out 75 student scholarships to lucky applicants so they can pursue their higher education. There is The Building Blocks Hackathon where top developers compete for prizes, described as, "...a weekend of hacking, hustling, and deep-diving into the blockchain industry's most cutting-edge developer tools."

And finally, there is the Consensus 2018 Proof-of-Work Pitch Competition in which teams try to pitch their development of new forms and improvements to consensus protocol. "We're looking for the scrappy teams who are building the next big thing in Bitcoin (BTC), Ethereum (ETH) or any other blockchain tech. To win, you'll need to wow our judges' panel of professional investors.", the website states.

Consensus looks to be bigger and more successful than ever this year. With far more attendees, sponsors, presenters, and competitions than previous years. This is all good news for short and long-term investors as this summit is one of the key drivers to improvement and adoption of cryptocurrencies. As a catalyst in the market, a significant mark up to the price is expected following the event, which is being held May 14th through the 16th.
